The National Arts Centre is Canada’s premiere performing arts centre distinguished nationally and internationally by its unique bilingual, multidisciplinary programming in music, dance and theatre. With a $70 million annual budget and four performance spaces, the NAC has a mandate from Parliament to nurture, encourage and promote artistic excellence in every discipline of the performing arts, showcasing the work of outstanding performing and creative artists from Canada and around the world. Located in Ottawa, the NAC is home to the internationally acclaimed National Arts Centre Orchestra under the dynamic artistic leadership of Music Director Pinchas Zukerman until summer 2015, after which Music Director Designate Alexander Shelley will assume leadership.

What will be my key activities?

Reporting to the Managing Director, the General Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Orchestra, the overall financial planning and analysis of the Music Department’s budget as well as collective bargaining and labour relations management.  The GM will lead a cross-departmental team to ensure the highest standards of concert production and presentation.  Working with our Principal Pops Conductor, Jack Everly, the GM will also have specific responsibility for Pops programming.


Skill Requirements:

- University degree in a related field

- 8 years of management experience within a top-tier professional orchestra

- In-depth understanding of the classical music field, orchestral operations, season planning, and concert presentation

- Strong knowledge of labour relations, and financial planning and analysis as these relate to orchestras

- Demonstrated ability in team leadership, communications, supervision, and follow-through.
